Large targets, voice prompts and honest feedback — the three decisions that decide whether older users keep using a device.
In our daily-check station programme, the biggest usability gains came from three changes: a single large button instead of a menu, spoken guidance at every step, and a clear light that says the reading is done.
None of them is technically difficult. All of them require deciding, early, that the product is designed for the least confident user in the room.
The same rule applies at home: if a device needs a manual, it is not finished.
